The Big Picture. Airports across the country are facing an increasingly urgent question: how do we protect critical aviation infrastructure from the growing threat of severe weather events?

Why It Matters. Severe weather events are testing the limits of airport infrastructure with greater frequency and intensity. From the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene to the day-to-day operational strains caused by extreme weather, airports need tools, funding, and coordination strategies to plan ahead.

The Opportunity. CSL and HMMH planned and facilitated a 1.5-day ACRP Insight Event that convened aviation stakeholders, experts, and practitioners to share knowledge, surface challenges, and identify opportunities for coordinated action. The event brought together 17 speakers and a diverse group of aviation professionals to explore the opportunities and gaps in infrastructure resilience planning.

The Way Ahead. Preparing U.S. Airport Infrastructure for Weather Events captures the key takeaways from the event, including emergent best practices for managing the impacts of severe weather and two problem statements for ACRP to consider pursuing further.
